Blackberry in the region started vigorously growing back following the fires,
and now threatens the regenerating native vegetation by smothering bushland and waterways.

NORTHERN YARRA BLACKBERRY ACTION GROUP

The Northern Yarra Blackberry Action Group cover the fire-affected region of Yarra Ranges and includes Steels Creek to the west, through Dixons Creek and across to Chum Creek in the east. It also includes parts of Healesville, Yarra Glen, Toolangi and Tarrawarra.

The fires of February 2009 have changed the priorities of many landowners in this region and community has become somewhat fragmented in its approach to blackberry control. Blackberry in the region started vigorously growing back following the fires, and now threatens the regenerating native vegetation by smothering bushland and waterways.
Following a series of community meetings in the area, the community applied for funding for the Northern Yarra Blackberry Action Group (NYBAG),  part of the Northern Yarra Landcare Network.

The group runs a program to assist landowners with their obligations to control blackberry on private land through developing property plans and other incentives. The group has been successful in securing addition National funding to add a biodiversity focus to their program.

For more up-to-date information on the NYBAG, please refer to the most recent Annual Report
